How to Cut Your Cable, Internet and Phone Bill by $500 A Year in 15-50 Minutes

Updated: Sep 12, 2022

If you'd like to keep your cable TV, Internet and even cell phone carrier service providers then this is how you pay the least. The average household with all three services bundled will save $500 - $600 a year. I'll quickly share how to do just this in one 15-30 minute phone call.

If your seeking to save even more, you can save up to $1,000 a year by cutting cable and just going with Netflix and/or Prime. If you do cut cable TV you may want to switch Internet providers and mobile phone carriers to save more money.

Cutting your cable TV, Internet and cell phone bill and keeping your same service providers can be done in as fast as 15-30 minutes is a simple process. I did this once a year for a decade. I'll share how I do this in four simple steps.

Before I share my process, there are companies that will do this for you for a 50% of the savings they cut your bill by. Thus you'll only save up to $250-$300 vs. $500-$600 a year doing it by yourself. These sites list the average savings they gain for clients is $600 a year. I've found the same to be true in my own calls to cable companies. Bill Fixers or Bill Slashers are two good companies to help you with that. Otherwise read on to DIY, save the most money and keep your same services. BTW, sometimes you can get upgraded services for free and slash you bill by $50/month. You just have to ask for the best deal you can.

Step 1. Call your Cable TV provider and simply ask to cancel services or say you are going to cancel services unless they can cut bill by $50-$75 per month for the next year (or two if that's what you want). From here they will transfer you to talk with a representative that can actually lower you bill and keep the same services.

Step 2. Tell the your Cable rep you are going to cancel services if you can't save $50-$75 a month for the next year. You can tell them I've received like offers to save this much. Tell them you'd like to keep your same services, but would be open to hearing about service upgrades, but still lowering bill by $50--$75 a month.

Step 3. Stick to Your Savings Goal of $50 - $75 a Month - Your Cable TV rep will need a couple of minutes to find their current best promotions they can offer you. They will come up with an offer and go into some detail. Their first offer will likely only save you $30 per month and they might say that is the best they can do. Now you need to restate you'd like to save $50 - $75 a month for the next year or you'll just cancel services. They will say " OK just give me a minute and I'll will look for other promotions. Give them a minute and they'll come back with a better offer. Now they'll probably be at $40 per month in savings. They may tell you this is the best they can do. Remind them again you are seeking to save $50 - $75 a month or you'll cancel services. Give them a chance to find a better deal.

Step 4. Ask to Speak to a Manager - Most of the time asking to speak to a manger is the only way to get the best deal. This may take an extra 10-20 minutes, but it'll save you an extra $50-$150 a year. Have you ever earned $300-$500 per hour? No? Well this is your chance. And keep in mind the value of cash. Cash is after tax income. Saving $500 in cash equals $600 - $900 of income. Keep in mind this phone call, even with speaking to the manager will take as little as 15-30 minutes and probably no more than an hour. Don't quit now and accept a lessor deal. Stay on the call for a few more minutes and stick to your savings goal until you get it.

Now simply restate to the manager your savings goal of $50 - $75 a month or you'll cancel services. They will likely say to give them a minute to look at you bill and will see what they can do. Now, they will come back with a better offer saving you an extra $5 to $15 a month for the next year. It may now be $50/month in savings. It may be only $40/month or even $30/month if you do not have cell phone bill bundled in. Be sure to ask if the amount they are quoting includes taxes and fees. Ask for a quote for what your new bill will be. Once this is clear, accept the deal and get on with your day. If you want to try one last time to save another $5-$10 a month, ask for a better deal. Give them a minute and if they say that's the best they can do, accept the deal and get on with your day and life. Congrats you just cut your cable TV, Internet and phone bills by $500-$600 for the next year.

Be sure to record the date and set an reminder on your phone to call back the cable company before the year is up to avoid paying higher costs once your one-year contract expires. Note that cable companies will not give you a credit for that extra $40-$50 per month you are paying when the promotional offer ends. So be diligent to save that money.
